Health Guidelines for Sick Students

During Covid: any concerns or questions regarding whether or not to send your child to school, please call me in the health office or contact me via email to discuss. There are many symptoms that in the past were minor but now we are more cautious due to the contagiousness of the covid virus and the many different symptoms, with and without a fever, that can be covid.

  • temperature 100 or higher, chills

  • sore throat

  • cough (not related to a known cause or diagnosis)

  • shortness of breath of breathing difficulty

  • new loss of taste or smell

  • headache when combined with other symptoms

  • muscle or body aches

  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

  • fatigue when combined with other symptoms

  • nasal congestion or runny nose (not due to known causes such as allergies) when combined with other symptoms

Also, the following guidelines are in place..

  • a child must be fever free for 24 hours (without the aid of medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen)
  • must be vomit free or diarrhea free for 24 hours before returning to school
  • any undiagnosed or suspicious rash
  • has the flu or flu symptoms
  • has a contagious infection (strep throat, tonsillitis, bronchitis, conjunctivitis, etc.) until they have been on antibiotics at least 24 hours from the first dose

If your child should develop any of these or other symptoms which may interfere with their ability to learn during school hours, the school nurse will notify you and the child will be dismissed. Please keep your emergency contacts updated as they will be notified for a dismissal if you are not available. The child is expected to be picked up in a timely manner to reduce the spread of illness to other students and/or staff and to allow your child to rest in an appropriate environment. As always, if your child is not feeling well, please consider the appropriateness of sending them to school. Some individuals may have increased susceptibility to infection or bring home an infection to someone with a weakened immune system. The best protection from illness is to keep your child home when symptoms of illness are present. Also, adequate rest and healing is important when your child is recovering from illness.
